Japan Meteorological Agency September 2000 Decoded data 1. Introduction The decoding routine runs every day and decodes selected elements in the reports that were received at JMA via GTS or Internet in the last 24 hours. Each decoded elements in reports are stored in Comma Separated Value (CSV) format. The decoded data include the file name of and the position in the original reports, so that users can easily refer to the original reports. If you have any program package on the market that can read CSV, you can easily import the decoded data to these packages. 2. Quality control Quality control is performed only to detect values out of the reasonable range as defined below for each decode element. If such a value is found, we set the corresponding code at the column "Warning message". The value in this column is the logical sum of corresponding codes listed below. Warning Code | Description ------------------------------------------------------------- 0 | No Warning 1 | Warning for the Call Sign / the WMO Buoy-ID 10 | Warning for the Position 100 | Warning for the Date (day, month and year) 1000 | Warning for the Time (hour and minute) (Temperature and Salinity Data only) 10000 | Warning for the Temperature 100000 | Warning for the Salinity (Wind Direction and Speed Data only) 10000 | Warning for the Wind Direction and Speed 2.1 Call Sign / the WMO Buoy ID (Warning Code = 1) 1) The decoded call sign is not consisting of three or more alphanumeric characters. 2) The decoded WMO Buoy-ID is not a number of 5 figures. 3) The decoded call sign is consisting of five or more alphanumeric characters and is including some identification letters of WMO codes such as 'BBXX', 'JJVV', ... etc. 2.2 Position (Warning Code = 10) 1) The quadrant of the globe is not '1', '3', '5' or '7'. 2) The latitude is out of the range between 0.00 and 90.00. 3) The longitude is out of the range between 0.00 and 180.00. 2.3 Date (Warning Code = 100) 1) The date is out of the range, for example 30 February, 31 April, ... etc. 2) The date is two or more years ago. 3) The date is in the future. 2.4 Time (Warning Code = 1000) 1) The decoded hour is out of the range between 0 and 24. 2) The decoded minute is out of the range between 0 and 60. 2.5 Temperature (Temperature and Salinity Data only, Warning Code = 10000) The decoded temperature is out of the range between -2.0 and 33.0 degree C. (This range is used for each of the temperatures at all the reported depths) 2.6 Salinity (Temperature and Salinity Data only, Warning Code = 100000) The decoded salinity is out of the range between 28.0 and 38.0 psu. (This range is used for each of the salinity at all the reported depths) 2.7 Wind Direction and Speed (Wind Direction and Speed Data only, Warning Code = 10000) 1) The decoded wind direction is out of the range between 0 and 360. 2) The decoded wind speed is out of the range between 0 and 40 m/s. 3) While the decoded wind direction is coded 0, the decoded wind speed is not coded 0, or vice versa. Note: When the wind is calm, the wind speed and direction are both coded 0, otherwise the direction of the wind from north (rounded off to the nearest 5 degree) is coded 36 in tens of degree. 3. The Date in the WMO Code FM13 SHIP (SHIP messages) Though the year and the month of the observation are not included in the SHIP, the date of the observation may be assumed to be the most recent day to that the report received on. And the year and the month of SHIP are calculated from the day in the report and the day that the report received on. 4. Decoded data files Each file consists of some comment lines and data records. A Line starting with '#' is a comment line. The format description is put at the top of file as comments. Each data record consists of decoded elements separated by a comma. "88.." means that the numerical element is not reported and "99.." means that the numerical element is not available for other reasons. "//.." means that the alphanumeric element is not available. Wind direction "777" means that the wind direction is reported as variable. 4.1 Directories Decoded data files are archived in the following directories. pub/ ----- DECODE/ ----- TS/ (Temperature and Salinity Data Files) | | | --- Wind/ (Wind Speed and Direction Data Files) | | --- GLOBAL/ ----- DECODE/ ----- TS/ | (Temperatures and Salinities Data Files) | --- Wind/ (Wind Speed and Direction Data Files) 4.2 Temperature and Salinity Data File 4.2.1 Name of the files Decoded temperature and salinity are stored in the following files. The 'MMM' and the 'dd' indicates the month and date the decode routine runs on, for example "Jan09" means "09 January". 1) pub/DECODE/TS/ts.rcvMMMdd Temperature and salinity observed in the NEAR-GOOS Region 2) pub/GLOBAL/DECODE/TS/ts.rcvMMMdd (Global Ocean) All the temperature and the salinity received at JMA 4.2.2 Format description # Ver 2.0 Copyright Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) # sequential number # ! warning messages of decode # ! ! 100000 : salinity # ! ! 10000 : temperature # ! ! 1000 : position # ! ! 100 : date # ! ! 10 : time # ! ! 1 : call sign # ! ! # ! ! flag on the significant figures of the original data # ! ! ! 0000 : surface data # ! ! ! 1000 : depth is reported in meters # ! ! ! 2000 : depth is reported in tenths of a meter # ! ! ! 000 : salinity is not available # ! ! ! 100 : salinity is reported in tenths of a psu # ! ! ! 200 : salinity is reported in hundredths of a psu # ! ! ! 300 : salinity is reported in thousandths of a psu # ! ! ! 10 : temperature is reported in degrees C # ! ! ! 20 : temperature is reported in tenths of a degree C # ! ! ! 30 : temperature is reported in hundredths of a degree C # ! ! ! 1 : latitude and longitude is reported in degrees and minutes # ! ! ! 2 : latitude and longitude is reported in tenths of a degree # ! ! ! 3 : latitude and longitude is reported in hundredths of a degree # ! ! ! 4 : latitude and longitude is reported in thousandths of a degree # ! ! ! # ! ! ! quadrant # ! ! ! ! latitude (0.001 degree) # ! ! ! ! ! longitude (0.001 degree) # ! ! ! ! ! ! day # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! month # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! year # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! hour # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! minute # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! sequential number total of observation # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! depth (m) # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! temperature (0.01 degree C) # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! salinity (0.001 psu) # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! call sign # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! received day # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! received month # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! position in the report file # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! original report file # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! 1,000000,0022,1,40400,N,138200,E,31, 8,2000, 0, 0, 1/1, 0, 2550, 88888, 21596, 1, 9, 37, ship.obsDay31.rcvSep01 2,000000,0022,1,40400,N,138200,E,31, 8,2000, 3, 0, 1/1, 0, 2620, 88888, 21596, 1, 9, 38, ship.obsDay31.rcvSep01 4.3 Wind Speed and Direction Data File 4.3.1 Name of the files Decoded wind speed and direction are stored in the following files. 1) pub/DECODE/Wind/ts.rcvMMMdd Wind data observed in the NEAR-GOOS Region 2) pub/GLOBAL/DECODE/Wind/ts.rcvMMMdd (Global Ocean) All the Wind data received at JMA 4.3.2 Format description # Ver 2.0 Copyright Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) # sequential number # ! warning messages of decode # ! ! 10000 : wind(speed or direction) # ! ! 1000 : position # ! ! 100 : date # ! ! 10 : time # ! ! 1 : call sign # ! ! # ! ! significant figures of the original data # ! ! ! 000 : wind direction is not available # ! ! ! 100 : wind direction in tens of a degree # ! ! ! 200 : wind direction in degrees # ! ! ! 00 : wind speed is not available # ! ! ! 10 : estimated wind speed is reported in meters per second # ! ! ! 20 : estimated wind speed is reported in knots # ! ! ! 30 : wind speed is reported in meters per second # ! ! ! 40 : wind speed is reported in knots # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! day # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! month # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! year # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! hour # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! minute # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! wind direction (degree) # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! wind dir=777 means that the wind direction is # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! reported as variable # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! wind speed (0.1m/s) # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! call sign # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! received day # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! received month # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! position in the report file # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! original report file # ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! 1,00000,142,1,28100,N,126300,E, 1, 9,2000, 0, 0, 170, 51, 22001, 1, 9, 1, ship.obsDay01.rcvSep01 2,00000,142,1,28100,N,126300,E,31, 8,2000, 0, 0, 180, 129, 22001, 1, 9, 52, ship.obsDay31.rcvSep01
