Results of QC

A total of 336 profiles (174357 data, reported by BATHY or TESAC) were received from the E.R. WILHELMSHAVEN.
The results of JMA quality control are as follows.
  • Grounded test
  • Error data: 1696 of 174357

  • Position on land test
  • On land: 0 of 336

    Invalid position: 0 of 336

  • Regional range test
  • Error data (low): 0 of 174357

Error data (high): 22 of 174357

  • Gradient test
  • Error data: 398 of 174357

For details of JMA's quality control procedures, please refer to this page.

Summary of QC

  • Some erroneous profiles were detected by JMA's automated quality control system. These were checked during the grounded test, regional range test and the gradient test, but almost all of the errors are seen as "hitting bottom" or "exceeding the guaranteed depth of observation" of XBT.
  • Among the data that passed JMA's automated quality control procedures, some "hitting bottom" data are found in the seas near the west coast of the United States (Refer to concerned figures). The topography used our grounded test is too rough to catch the error.
  • There are some erroneous profiles around 37°N.
  • There are large differences at depths of between 100 and 200m in the seas south from 16°N. The observation data shows sharper thermocline better than the assimilation data.
  • With the exception of the above errors and differences, there were no significant biases in comparison with the results of assimilation by JMA.
