Results of QC

A total of 192 profiles (135252 data, reported by BATHY or TESAC) were received from the TACOMA TRADER.
The results of JMA quality control are as follows.
  • Grounded test
  • Error data: 0 of 135252

  • Position on land test
  • On land: 0 of 192

    Invalid position: 0 of 192

  • Regional range test
  • Error data (low): 0 of 135252

Error data (high): 0 of 135252

  • Gradient test
  • Error data: 209 of 135252

For details of JMA's quality control procedures, please refer to this page.

Summary of QC

  • Some erroneous profiles are detected by JMA's automated quality control procedures. These are checked by gradient test. The main cause will be "hitting bottom" of XBT.
  • Among the data that passed JMA's automated quality control procedures, some "hitting bottom" data are found in the seas adjacent Hawaii Islands(Refer to concerned figures). The topography used our grounded test is too rough to catch the error.
  • There were large differences between observation data and the results of assimilation in areas south of the Kuroshio extension (west of 155°E) due to cold and warm eddies.
  • There are large differences at depths of between 50 and 250m in the seas east from 178°N. The observation data shows sharper thermocline better than the assimilation data.
  • With the exception of the above errors and differences, there were no significant biases in comparison with the results of assimilation by JMA.
