Results of QC

A total of 190 profiles (133910 data, reported by BATHY or TESAC) were received from the TACOMA TRADER.
The results of JMA quality control are as follows.
  • Grounded test
  • Error data: 0 of 133910

  • Position on land test
  • On land: 0 of 190

    Invalid position: 0 of 190

  • Regional range test
  • Error data (low): 0 of 133910

Error data (high): 0 of 133910

  • Gradient test
  • Error data: 68 of 133910

For details of JMA's quality control procedures, please refer to this page.

Summary of QC

  • Some erroneous profiles are detected by JMA's automated quality control procedures. These are checked by gradient test. The main cause will be "hitting bottom" of XBT.
  • There were large differences between observation data and the results of assimilation in areas south of the Kuroshio extension (west of 154°E) due to cold and warm eddies.
  • There are large differences at depths of between 50 and 300m in the seas east from 177°E. The observation data shows sharper thermocline better than the assimilation data.
  • With the exception of the above errors and differences, there were no significant biases in comparison with the results of assimilation by JMA.
