Results of QC

A total of 190 profiles (85382 data, reported by BATHY or TESAC) were received from the TACOMA TRADER.
The results of JMA quality control are as follows.
  • Grounded test
  • Error data: 0 of 85382

  • Position on land test
  • On land: 0 of 190

    Invalid position: 0 of 190

  • Regional range test
  • Error data (low): 0 of 85382

Error data (high): 171 of 85382

  • Gradient test
  • Error data: 38 of 85382

For details of JMA's quality control procedures, please refer to this page.

Summary of QC

  • Some erroneous profiles are detected by JMA's automated quality control procedures. These are checked by the regional range test and the gradient test.
  • There were large differences between observation data and the results of assimilation in areas south of the Kuroshio extension (west of 150°E) due to cold and warm eddies.
  • Among the data that passed JMA's automated quality control procedures, some "hitting bottom" data are found in the seas southeast of Japan(Refer to concerned figures) and adjacent Hawaii Islands(Refer to concerned figures). The topography used our grounded test is too rough to catch the error.
  • There are large differences at depths of between 50 and 300m in the seas around 167°W. The observation data shows sharper thermocline better than the assimilation data.
  • With the exception of the above errors and differences, there were no significant biases in comparison with the results of assimilation by JMA.
