Results of QC

A total of 261 profiles (114823 data, reported by BATHY or TESAC) were received from the MAERSK LOME.
The results of JMA quality control are as follows.
  • Grounded test
  • Error data: 1906 of 114823

  • Position on land test
  • On land: 0 of 261

    Invalid position: 0 of 261

  • Regional range test
  • Error data (low): 0 of 114823

Error data (high): 17 of 114823

  • Gradient test
  • Error data: 15 of 114823

For details of JMA's quality control procedures, please refer to this page.

Summary of QC

  • QC detected some unnatural profiles shown in 'Results of QC'.
  • Among the data that passed JMA's automated quality control procedures, some "hitting bottom" data are found in the seas around Izu ridge (Refer to concerned figures). The topography used our grounded test is too rough to catch the error.
  • There are large differences at depths of between 100 and 350m in the seas south of 10°N. The observation data shows sharper thermocline better than the assimilation data.
  • There are differences above 2°C between observation data and the results of assimilation at depths of between 350 and 600m around 20°N.
  • With the exception of the above errors and differences, there are no significant biases in comparison with the results of assimilation by JMA.

Dots and error bars represent the averages and root mean squares of the differences, respectively. Crosses represent the maximum/minimum differences.
