CO2 ROUND-ROBIN REFERENCE GAS INTERCOMPARISON 1999-2000

(E-mail message from Dr. Jim Peterson on 6 November 2002)

To participants in the 1999-2000 WMO Standards Intercomparison.

I am sending to you today a preliminary report of the results for CO2 concentrations. This first report has only the raw data without any interpretation or discussion.
I have just recently received the next-to-last participants report. Although I have not yet received the Swedish report, I have waited long enough and am sending this preliminary summary of CO2 concentration results now because I know that you all are interested in the results. The preliminary results for the other species will be available soon.
Attached are two tables of results: (1) the CO2 values that you submitted to me and (2) the differences between your values and the NOAA values for your tanks. For this difference calculation, I have taken the average of the 'before' and 'after' NOAA values. These two files were prepared with EXCEL data base software. Let me know if you are unable to open the files and we can re-send them in an alternate format.
Please accept these tables as 'Preliminary.' First, you should look carefully at your values to make sure that I have listed them accurately. Let me know if you see any errors. Second, you will see that there was some change in the concentrations of the NOAA tanks between the initial analysis and the final analysis. For all tanks, the assigned values increased; the increases ranged from 0.05 to 0.15 ppm. Pieter Tans and his staff are continuing to investigate the reasons for this increase.
Thank you for your participation. I welcome your comments.
