Himawari Navigation Monitoring Guide
Navigation and Calibration Monitoring
The accuracy of Himawari image projection is evaluated by comparing coastlines
recognized in Himawari images with those on referential maps. This evaluation
is known as landmark analysis.
Landmark analysis vectors representing positional departure between the image and the reference map are measured by phase only correlation.
Vectors which seem to be contaminated by cloud were removed, and statistical outlier vectors also were removed.
No rotational misalignment is taken into account.
Images used in the analysis are those of Himawari band 13
(10.4 µm) and band 7 (3.9 µm).
Error vectors computed by landmark evaluation contain both an image registration
error and a landmark analysis error. Since the landmark analysis error
can be assumed to have no bias, the average of the error vectors is expected
to represent the most likely image registration error.
This page shows horizontal mapping of image location error vectors evaluated by landmark analysis. The date and time of the image can be selected from the menu on the left side. The error vectors displayed on the maps are highlighted. The horizontal and vertical vectors in the bottom left corner are references for the error vectors representing one infrared pixel length. These landmark analysis maps are posted about 10 minutes after each observation on a real-time basis.
This page shows temporal trends and changes in HSD navigation accuracy. The charts on the monitoring page show temporal sequences of error vector components, vertical length, horizontal length, magnitude and direction. The error vectors in the charts are average values of landmark analysis error vectors with respect to four regions for each image.
