Results of QC

A total of 254 profiles (116834 data, reported by BATHY or TESAC) were received from the SAFMARINE MERU.
The results of JMA quality control are as follows.
  • Grounded test
  • Error data: 1462 of 116834

  • Position on land test
  • On land: 0 of 254

    Invalid position: 0 of 254

  • Regional range test
  • Error data (low): 2 of 116834

Error data (high): 159 of 116834

  • Gradient test
  • Error data: 246 of 116834

For datails of JMA's quality control procedures, please refer to this page.

Summary of QC

  • Some erroneous profiles are detected by JMA's automated quality control procedures. These are checked by the grounded test, regional range test and the gradient test. The main cause will be "hitting bottom" of XBT.
  • Among the data that passed JMA's automated quality control procedures, some "hitting bottom" data are found in the seas around Izu ridge (Refer to concerned figures). The topography used our grounded test is too rough to catch the error.
  • Two of the observations around 12°N are considered to be erroneous data (Refer to concerned figures).
  • There are large differences at depths of between 100 and 250m in the seas between equator and 10°N. The observation data shows sharper thermocline better than the assimilation data.
  • With the exception of the above errors and differences, there were no significant biases in comparison with the results of assimilation by JMA.
