Highlight

  • Monthly mean temperatures were extremely high in and around northern Siberia, from western Mongolia to northwestern China, in eastern China, from southwestern China to northeastern India, in and around the central part of Southeast Asia, from eastern Europe to the western part of Northern Africa, from the southern to western part of Western Africa, from Kenya to Mauritius, from the western USA to the northwestern part of South America, and from northern to eastern Brazil.
  • Monthly precipitation amounts were extremely high in and around the southern part of South Asia, from southwestern Europe to the western part of Northern Africa, in the central part of Western Africa, and in the central USA.
  • Monthly precipitation amounts were extremely low from eastern to central Europe, from eastern Mexico to the northwestern part of South America, and in the southern part of South America.

  • It was reported that heat waves caused more than 70 fatalities from early to mid August in Japan (Fire and Disaster Management Agency of Japan, as of 3 September).
  • The monthly mean temperature in eastern Japan was the third highest for August since 1946.

  • It was reported that Typhoon "LEKIMA", "PODUL" and heavy rains caused more than 70 fatalities from eastern China to northern Thailand (the government of China, the government of Viet Nam, European Commission).
