Monthly Highlights
- Monthly mean temperatures were significantly above normal from eastern Japan to Okinawa/Amami, with the highest on record for January since 1946 in eastern and western Japan, because winter monsoon patterns appeared much less than normal.
- Monthly snowfall amounts were the least on record for January since 1961 on the Sea of Japan side of northern, eastern and western Japan.
- Monthly precipitation amounts were also significantly below normal on the Sea of Japan side of northern Japan. Monthly sunshine durations were below normal on the Pacific side of eastern Japan and in western Japan, since cyclones periodically passed over the mainland.
