Monthly Highlights

- Monthly mean temperatures were significantly above normal in northern/eastern/western Japan and were above normal in Okinawa/Amami, because the regions were less affected by cold air and covered by warm-air.
- Monthly precipitation amounts were significantly above normal on the sea of Japan side of northern Japan and were above normal on the Pacific side of northern Japan, because the regions were well affected by low-pressure systems and the winter monsoon in the middle and late of the month. On the other hand, they were significantly below normal in Okinawa/Amami and were below normal on the Pacific side of western Japan, due to weak influences of low-pressure systems.
- Monthly sunshine durations were significantly above normal in Okinawa/Amami and were above normal on the sea of Japan side of northern/eastern/western Japan and on the Pacific side of western Japan, because the regions were well covered by high pressure systems.
- In late January snowfall amounts were significantly above normal on the sea of Japan side of western Japan, due to strong cold air inflow.
