Results of QC

A total of 289 profiles (130791 data, reported by BATHY or TESAC) were received from the MAERSK NEW ORLEANS.
The results of JMA quality control are as follows.
  • Grounded test
  • Error data: 68 of 130791

  • Position on land test
  • On land: 0 of 289

    Invalid position: 0 of 289

  • Regional range test
  • Error data (low): 0 of 130791

Error data (high): 130 of 130791

  • Gradient test
  • Error data: 317 of 130791

For datails of JMA's quality control procedures, please refer to this page.

Summary of QC

  • Some erroneous profiles were detected by JMA's automated quality control system. These were checked during the regional range test and the gradient test, but all of the errors are seen as "hitting bottom" or "exceeding the guaranteed depth of observation" of XBT.
  • One of the observations at around 12°N, 154°W is considered to be erroneous data.
  • There are large differences at depths of between 100 and 200m. The observation data shows sharper thermocline better than the assimilation data.
  • With the exception of the above errors and differences, there were no significant biases in comparison with the results of assimilation by JMA.
