Results of QC

A total of 138 profiles (61711 data, reported by BATHY or TESAC) were received from the Mell Springwood.
The results of JMA quality control are as follows.
  • Grounded test
  • Error data: 442 of 61711

  • Position on land test
  • On land: 0 of 138

    Invalid position: 0 of 138

  • Regional range test
  • Error data (low): 0 of 61711

Error data (high): 634 of 61711

  • Gradient test
  • Error data: 16 of 61711

For datails of JMA's quality control procedures, please refer to this page.

Summary of QC

  • Some erroneous profiles are detected by JMA's automated quality control procedures. These are checked by the grounded test, the regional range test and the gradient test, but the true cause will be, "hitting bottom" or "exceeding the guaranteed depth of observation" of XBT.
  • Among the data that passed JMA's automated quality control procedures, some "hitting bottom" data are found in the seas south of Taiwan (Refer to concerned figures) and adjacent the Ryukyu Chain (Refer to concerned figures). The topography used our grounded test is too rough to catch the error.
  • One of the observations at around 128°E is considered to be erroneous data.
  • With the exception of the above errors, there was no significant bias in comparison with the results of assimilation by JMA.
