Highlight

  • Annual mean temperatures were above normal mainly in the mid-latitudes, and very high from East Asia to Central Asia, from northwestern Europe to the northern part of Northern Africa, and from northern Australia to New Zealand. Annual mean temperatures were the highest on record in the UK, Germany, France, Spain, and New Zealand.
  • Extremely high temperatures were frequently observed in China, from central Europe to the northern part of Northern Africa, and from northern Australia to New Zealand. (Map)
  • Annual precipitation amounts were above normal from the Nansei Islands of Japan to Southeast Asia, from northwestern India to southern Pakistan, and from southeastern Australia to New Zealand, and below normal from southern Europe to the northwestern part of Northern Africa, and in the western part of South America.
  • Extremely high precipitation amounts were frequently observed from the southern part of East Asia to Southeast Asia, and in southeastern Australia.   • It was reported that Tropical Storm "MEGI" in April and "NALGAE" in October caused a total of at least 440 fatalities in the Philippines (the government of the Philippines, EM-DAT).
3WarmMarch-May From western China to Pakistan
  • The monthly mean temperature in China in March was the highest on record for this month since 1961 (China Meteorological Administration).
4Cold· WetJune-August (for Cold), July-August (for Wet) In and around Pakistan
  • It was reported that heavy rains from May to September caused a total of at least 4,510 fatalities in and around South Asia. In particular, it was reported that heavy rains caused at least 1,730 fatalities in Pakistan (EM-DAT).

  • The monthly mean temperatures in France in May and October were the highest on record for respective months since 1900 (Meteo France).
  • The monthly mean temperatures in Portugal in May, July and December were the highest on record for respective months since 1931 (The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere).
  • The monthly mean temperatures in Spain in July and October were the highest on record for respective months since 1961 (The State Meteorological Agency, Spain).
  • The monthly mean temperature in Germany in October was the highest for this month since 1881 (Deutscher Wetterdienst, Germany).
  • The seasonal mean temperature in Spain in summer (from June to August) was the highest on record for this season since 1961 (The State Meteorological Agency, Spain).
  • The annual mean temperature in the UK in 2022 was the highest on record since 1884 (UK Met Office).
  • The annual mean temperature in Germany in 2022 was the highest on record since 1881 (Deutscher Wetterdienst, Germany).
  • The annual mean temperature in France in 2022 was the highest on record since 1900 (Meteo France).

  • In the eastern UK 40.3 degrees Celsius was recorded at Coningsby on 19 July, which is a new national maximum temperature record in the UK (UK Met Office).

  • It was reported that Tropical Storm "ANA" in January, Cyclones "BATSIRAI", "EMNATI", Tropical Storm "DUMAKO" in February, and Cyclone "GOMBE" in March caused a total of at least 390 fatalities from Madagascar to Malawi (EM-DAT).
7Heavy RainApril The southeastern part of South Africa
  • It was reported that heavy rains in April caused at least 540 fatalities in the southeastern part of South Africa (EM-DAT).
8HurricaneSeptember-October From the southeastern to eastern USA
  • It was reported that Hurricane "IAN" from September to October caused at least 150 fatalities and economic losses estimated at US$112.9 billion from the southeastern to eastern USA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the USA).
9Heavy RainJanuary-February, May From northeastern to southeastern Brazil
  • It was reported that heavy rains from January to February, and in May caused a total of at least 430 fatalities from northeastern to southeastern Brazil (EM-DAT).
10WarmMarch-November From northern Australia to northern New Zealand
  • The monthly mean temperature in New Zealand in November was the highest on record for this month since 1909 (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, New Zealand).
  • The seasonal mean temperature in New Zealand in winter (from June to August) was the highest on record for this season since 1909 (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, New Zealand).
  • The annual mean temperature in New Zealand in 2022 was the highest on record since 1909 (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, New Zealand).
11WetJanuary, March-May, July-November Southeastern Australia
  • The monthly precipitation amount in Australia in October was the second highest for this month since 1900 (Bureau of Meteorology, Australia).
  • The seasonal precipitation amount in Australia in spring (from September to November) was the second highest on record for this season since 1900 (Bureau of Meteorology, Australia).
