Global Sea Surface Temperature Data Sets

We provide 1x1 degree resolution GPV datas from January 1891 up to the latest month.
Information about the SST analysis and explanation for SST-GPV file are available in following pages respectively.

Notice : JMA has been providing COBE-SST2 (COBE-SST version 2) since December 2021. COBE-SST2 data are available on NEAR-GOOS site. Please note that you can obtain COBE-SST version 1 datasets below.

To obtain GPV files of historical monthly mean SSTs,

Specify the period by "Month" and "Year", then push "Show Link List" or "Show URL List".

! Attention : Latest Data Set ---  !

Start of period - Month :   Year :
End of period - Month :   Year :
<-- It will show you the list of links to GPV files you specified.
<-- If you prefer to use a download-tool like wget, please try this button.

To obtain GPV files of monthly mean SST normals,

Push "Show Link List" or "Show URL List" below.

Normals are values averaged over the period from year 1991 to year 2020.
* Normal data were replaced on May 19th 2021 along with the update of climatological normals.

Notice of Correction

November 7th 2013

Since some satellite data had been used incorrectly to estimate SSTs in sea ice areas, monthly mean SST data from January 2006 to December 2009 and SST normals were replaced with re-calculated ones. Please download the data again, if you obtained them previously.

November 10th 2011

Since 18th May 2011, until November 10th 2011, old SST normals (1971-2000 average) had been distributed through this web page by mistake. Correct normals (1981-2010 average) were put here today. Please download the data again, if you obtained them during the period mentioned above.

January 11th 2011

We corrected descriptions in the monthly mean SST-GPV files to be more strictly proper for the form of WMO binary code FM92 GRIB edition 1. Nevertheless, we emphasize that the values of SSTs themselves are the same as those of pervious files. The corrected files are available now.
The incorrect number - '0' in Number of unused bits (last 4bit of 4 Octet in Section 4, i. e. binary data section) was replaced by correct number - '6': if you checked precisely the length of binary data section using incorrect number of unused bits, you might receive error messages. The other part of Section 4 (Binary data section) are the same as those in the previous files.

March 18th 2010

Incorrect descriptions were found in the SST-GPV file for monthly mean normal values in the form of WMO binary code FM92 GRIB edition 1.
The incorrect number - '1.000' degree for latitude of last grid point in 18-20 Octet in Section 2 (Grid description section) was replaced with correct number - '89.500' degree, and the incorrect number - '23.964' degree for latitudinal direction increment in 26-27 Octet in Section 2 was replaced with correct number - '1.000' degree.
The corrected files are available now.
