- In the first half of the autumn, the activity of a stationary front (referred to as the autumn rain front in Japan) and influences of typhoons were weaker than normal. In the latter half of the season, cold air inflow to northern Japan was weaker and cut off lows frequently affected to the region. As a result, seasonal mean temperatures were above normal in northern and western Japan. Seasonal precipitation amounts were above normal on the Sea of Japan side of northern Japan, while below normal on the Pacific side of eastern Japan, western Japan, and Okinawa/Amami. Seasonal sunshine durations were significantly above normal on the Sea of Japan side of northern Japan, eastern Japan and Okinawa/Amami, and above normal on the Pacific side of northern Japan and western Japan. (see also "Monthly Highlights on the Climate System" for each month of the autumn).
