Weekly, 10-day and Half-monthly Mean Temperature and Total Precipitation Maps

Weekly, 10-day and half-monthly figures for mean temperatures and total precipitation are based on SYNOP reports submitted from NMHSs around the world. Described below are the methods used to calculate these figures, which may include estimation errors.

Mean Temperature

SYNOP reports contain real-time temperature data. Daily mean temperatures are calculated as averages of real-time SYNOP temperature data for 00, 06, 12 and 18UTC, or are estimated as averages of the daily maximum and minimum temperatures if these four temperature values are unavailable. Weekly/10-day/half-monthly mean temperatures are calculated by averaging the daily mean temperatures when at least 80% of daily data are available. Time-series graphs of 10-day and half-monthly temperatures are provided for slected stations.

Total precipitation

SYNOP reports also contain precipitation amounts data for the latest 6-, 12- and 24-hour periods, and daily precipitation amounts are calculated by simply adding these totals. Weekly/10-day/half-monthly total precipitation values are calculated from cumulative daily precipitation amounts where at least 80% of daily data are available for the period. Time-series graphs of 10-day and half-monthly total precipitation are provided for selected stations.
